Serigala abu-abu dianggap musnah dari daratan utama Amerika Serikat pada 1940an, namun beberapa bertahan hidup di pojok timur laut terpencil Minnesota. Setelah mereka didaftarkan sebagai spesies terancam, mereka secara alami meluas ke banyak habitat di negara-negara bagian barat tengah Minnesota, Michigan, dan Wisconsin tempat yang diduduki oleh mereka pada masa sebelumnya.
