Empoasca fabae masuk keluarga Cicadellidae dan genus Empoasca dalam ordo Hemiptera.[1] Spesies tersebut lebih dikenal sebagai belalang besar kentang.[1] Di Amerika Utara, spesies tersebut merupakan hama pertanian yang serius.[2] Tanaman yang terdampak kebanyakan adalah kentang, semanggi, kacang, apel dan alfalfa.[3]
